Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is one of the major pathogens affecting the swine industry worldwide. PRRSV is a positive-sense ssRNA enveloped virus of the family Arteriviridae.

The aim of our study was to find out the number of clinical manifestation in farms with animals vaccinated against PRRSV and find out genotypic identity of isolates. Our study were carried out in the period 2013-April 2014. Samples from 22 regions and Crimea Peninsula were sent for the research. We analyzed 563 samples (tissue, oral fluid and sperm), which we collected in 65 farms of Ukraine with a variable number of animal experiencing respiratory or reproductive signs. Samples were analyzed for PRRSV by RT-PCR. The amount of PRRSV positive samples is 96, which is nearly 17%. PRRSV was detected in farms from 18 regions of Ukraine and in Crimea Peninsula.

Interestingly, that PRRSV were detected only in 13% in all reproductive cases (328 samples) in contrast the percentage of PRRSV positive cases with respiratory distress is 24 % ( 225 samples). Also we had 10 samples from the animals with no clinical signs and only one was PRRSV positive. The next step of our study was analysis of PRRSV genotype prevalence . For this purpose we used 25 PRRSV positive samples from the farm with constant outbreaks of the disease in the vaccinated herds.

All the samples were identified as European genotype PRRSV. We need to emphasize that these results are only the beginning of a major study of genetic characteristics of PRRSV in Ukraine. We are starting with sequencing ORF 5 for the determinate a variability rate of PRRSV and to establish the main ways of spreading pathogen through Ukraine.
